Rona Conti received her degree from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1964 and studied in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and with Roger Barr at the International Student and Artist’s Center on Boulevarde Raspail. Subsequently she studied drawing at Boston University, at the Universita de Perugia, Italy, and ceramics at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.  In 1999 she began studying Japanese calligraphy with Kobayashi Sensei and has lived intermittently in Japan continuing her studies and incorporating them into her handmade paper artwork produced in New York City at Dieu Donne Papermill.

Her work is both abstract and representational, intellectual and intuitive. Derived from explicit associations in the visual world , the landscape and its atmosphere, exploring a constantly developing vocabulary including Japanese calligraphy, writing as abstraction, writing as meaning,  marks incorporated with pulp painting, sometimes stark, sometimes with an emphasis on color…..color in its ever changing and contrasting aura – paint as color on surface, paint picket-fenced between colors, paint pushing and pulling, stroking and daubing……paint mysterious, sensual and vigorous, paint and pulp flowing into form.

Rona Conti’s artwork is represented in public, private and corporate collections in the United States, Europe, Japan, Canada, Chile, and Australia. She is represented in the permanent collections of museums including the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Corporate Collections including Triangle Trust, New York City, Shawmut Bank, Boston, Massachusetts, and numerous private collections including Lois and Henry Foster, Boston, MA, Mihoko Igusa, Takasaki, Japan,  Mieko Kobayashi, Gunma-machi, Japan, Karen Wilkin, New York City, and The Alexander Graham Bell Estate, Baddeck, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
